About the Australian Energy Market

The energy sector is one of the largest in Australia accounting for approximately 5 per cent of Australia's total industry value. The energy sector has a central role to play in meeting our nation's most basic social and economic needs, with energy security being vitally important. It underpins every form of our economic activity, powering our industries, our workplaces, and our homes.

Deregulation is the process of decreasing or removing government regulatory control over industries and letting competitive forces drive the market to provide customers choice.

Deregulation in Australia commenced in 2001 with Victoria the first state to deregulate. The energy market in Australia is quite diverse. In some states, such as Victoria, there is a significant number of energy suppliers and a healthy level of retail competition. In other states, such as Western Australia, there is a monopoly supplier and as a result, no consumer choice.

Full retail competition at the consumer level has been introduced in Victoria, NSW, ACT, South Australia and Queensland. However, due to differing regulated retail prices and wholesale purchase costs in each of these states and territories there can be significant differences in the level of competition.
